Northern Ridge District Banquet

Pack 3000’s committee chair, Hemang Shah, was awarded a prestigious District Award of Merit at the 2020 Northern Ridge District banquet

The Northern Ridge District (which encompasses Roswell, Alpharetta, Milton, and Johns Creek) held their annual banquet on January 25 to review the previous year, plan for next year, and honor our most exceptional scout leaders. We are fortunate to be part of such a successful and high-energy district. Pack 3000’s very own Hemang Shah earned a District Award of Merit for his outstanding service to scouting at the district level!

2020 Pinewood Derby

A selection of fast cars (and fast sandwiches) at the starting gate

The 2020 Pinewood Derby was a great success, with entries from every rank (Lions through Arrow of Light) plus parents and siblings. Thank you to Scott Brown (Wolf den leader) for organizing the event, and thank you to all of the volunteers who helped the day run smoothly.

This year’s overall champion was Liam Finan, with William Brown and Anderson Kimball in 2nd and 3rd place overall. Liam’s car consistently ran over 200 scaled miles per hour!

We also had a wide variety of creative cars this year, including rainbows, arrows, space shuttles, sandwiches, and much more.

Pinewood Derby Check-In

The 2020 Pack 3000 Pinewood Derby field: 51 cars competed in total.

Thank you to all of our intrepid racers and diligent inspectors for making the pinewood derby check-in a success! Our scouts (and parents and siblings) brought some really impressive cars this year.

January Den Meeting

We completed the “Make it Move” elective adventure at today’s den meeting, learning about (and experimenting with!) all sorts of machines, including popsicle stick chain reactions, pulleys in different configurations, levers, and Rube Goldberg contraptions.

We specifically did the following components of Make it Move:

  • 1. Create an “exploding” craft stick reaction
  • 2. Make two simple pulleys, and use them to move objects.
  • 3. Make a lever by creating a seesaw using a spool and a wooden paint stirrer. Explore the way it balances by placing different objects on each end.
  • 4B. Construct a real Rube Goldberg–type machine to complete a task assigned by your den leader. Use at least two simple machines and include at least four steps.

Thank you to Christina Carns for planning the meeting and gathering the materials for us to use!

The teepee is back!

Have you seen the new teepee at the BUMC scout compound? We are thrilled to have this local landmark back in action! Thank you Troop 3000!

Ed’s Speed Shop 2020

Thank you for coming out to Ed’s Speed Shop on Saturday January 11! The weather was messy (per speed shop tradition), but it takes more than that to deter our pinewood derby car designers. And besides, there is nothing like hot chocolate and donuts when the weather is bad. It looks like we are going to have a lot of creative cars in the race this year!

December pack meeting

The final Pack 3000 pack meeting of 2019 was one to remember! The pack met its popcorn fundraising goal (and then some) and earned a pizza and ice cream party. Not only that, but 13 (!!!) of our cub scouts raised enough money to earn the very special privilege of throwing a pie in the face of a cub scout leader!

Thank you Pack 3000 for working so hard this year, thank you to our popcorn kernel Shannan Hamil, and thank you to all the parents!

We also distributed pinewood derby car kits and class B T-shirts, and collected supplemental dues. Please contact your den leader if you missed the meeting and need to catch up on those things.

Den 4 December meeting

At our December 8th meeting, our scouts learned all about safe and responsible use of pocket knives! They completed the “bear claws” requirement (combining parts of 3a and 3b by whittling soap and practicing opening letters) and also fulfilled the requirements to earn a “whittling chip”, which gives them the privilege of using pocket knives at designated scout events with their parent’s and den leader’s permission.

We are extremely proud of our den for doing a great job with this adventure! Everyone was very attentive and serious about safety.

Den 4 November meeting

Our scouts gathered at Autrey Mill’s Scout Day on November 16 to complete the “Fur, Feather, and Ferns” requirement. We had a great time, and the volunteers there did a wonderful job setting up stations for the scouts to complete their adventure requirements. Highlights included observing snakes and turtles in their visitor’s center, looking for wildlife on a hike, exploring a hoola-hoop ring for bugs, planting a bean, learning about composting, observing plants with a magnifying glass, and learning about endangered species. Oh, and don’t forget the hot chocolate!

If you missed this requirement, you may already have much of it complete (except for the hike) from summer camp. Ask Jason and Phil if you have questions.

On the following day (Sunday November 17) our scouts volunteered with the Meals by Grace program at Midway UMC and helped to prepare meal boxes for families in need in the area. Thank you to Heather Velloff for setting this up for us. It’s a wonderful cause, and it helped our scouts fulfill the community service component of their “Paws for Action” adventure.

Den 4 at the Pack 3000 fall field trip

Den 4 had a great time on the Pack 3000 fall field trip. As one of the bigger dens, we got our very own (and very patient) tour guide for most of the night. Some of our favorite creatures were the sting rays and jellyfish. The scout leaders are also very pleased to report that no one fell into the shark tank.

October pack meeting

Happy Halloween!

The theme for this month’s pack meeting was “kind”. It was also an extra spooky pack meeting as the scouts raced spiders, tried to guess what was in buckets of “eyeballs”, “spider legs”, and “worms”, and “bats”, and designed their own skeletons.

2019 Fall Field Trip

Time to feed the otters!
Night night, river monster…

Pack 3000 had a great overnight trip to the Tennessee Aquarium on Saturday, October 26. We saw an IMAX movie about rescue dogs, toured the aquarium, learned about, watched, and touched all sorts of animals (including a rather messy legless lizard), saw what happens “behind the scenes” at night, ate pizza, and last but not least camped out with some monsters from the deep!

Den 4 October meeting

Den 4 met in downtown Alpharetta for their October meeting to work on requirements 1. (learn about the flag, the pledge of allegiance, and display a flag at home for a month) and 2.B. (visit historical sites in your community).

We brought a *lot* of energy to Alpharetta today! You can pick up a walking tour brochure at the visitors center if you want to retrace our steps. There is also a history museum in city hall that is open during the week that would be a great resource for learning about community history. Christina Carns (Thomas’s mom!) led us on today’s walking tour.

Our scouts each took home a desk flag to display in their rooms so that they can reflect what they learned about the flag and the pledge of allegiance.

We wrapped up our day with an impromptu visit to the First City Fair at Alpharetta First Baptist Church. Who could ask for a better way to end a den meeting than with bouncy houses, popcorn, carnival games, and candy?

Bear Scout day at Tellus Science Museum

Some of our Pack 3000 Den 4 Scouts joined other Bear Scouts for a day of science at Tellus on Saturday October 5. They visited the planetarium, learned about astronomy, and did all sorts of experiments with static electricity, color, buoyancy, and constellations along the way to completing the “Out of this World” NOVA award and the “Super Science” elective adventure. Thank you Tellus for putting on a great program!

Den 4 September (fall campout) meeting

Thank you Den 4 for joining us for another awesome campout! Our den set up, organized, and led the other scouts in the pack through “carnival” games during the pack activity time. During our den time we talked about our favorite parts of the games, and what worked well and what didn’t. We also made up our own den game with some custom rules and talked about what we can do to make games fun for anyone. We completed the following components to complete the “Grin and Bear It” adventure:

  • #1 Play a challenge game or initiative game with the members of your den. Take part in a reflection after the game.
  • #2 Working with the members of your den, organize a Cub Scout carnival and lead it at a special event.
  • #3 Help younger Cub Scouts take part in one of the events at the Cub Scout carnival.
  • #4 After the Cub Scout carnival, discuss with the members of your den and your den leader what went well, what could be done better, and how everyone worked together to make the event a success.

#1 and #4 were done during our den meeting time, while #2 and #3 were done during the pack activity time.

Our scouts also did a great job with the “Soap and Scrubby” and “Lightbulb” skits at the camp fire!

Thank you to all of our parents for helping around the camp site, whether it was running activities, planning skits, or helping with the food!

2019 Fall Campout

Pack 3000, gathering around the campfire

Thank you everyone for joining us for another fantastic fall campout! It was an action packed weekend full of games, hikes, scavenger hunts, campfires, food, s’mores, cobbler, and much more. Also thank you to Birmingham United Methodist Church for graciously allowing us to use their property, and most of all, thank you to all of the leaders and parents who helped to make this event such a success!

Den 4 September meeting

We held our first den meeting of the year on September 8, 2019! The adventure for this camp was “Bear Necessities”, so we learned all about how to prepare for camping.

Required components completed (the last is optional):

  • 2. Make a list of items you should take along on the activity selected in Requirement 1.
  • 3. Make a list of equipment that the group should bring along in addition to each Scout’s personal gear for the activity selected in Requirement 1.
  • 4. Help set up a tent. Determine a good spot for the tent, and explain to your den leader why you picked it.
  • 5. Demonstrate how to tie two half hitches and explain what the hitch is used for.

Homework:

  1. While working on your Bear badge, attend one of the following:
  • A daytime or overnight campout with your pack or family
  • An outdoor activity with your den or pack
  • Day camp
  • Resident camp

2019 Orientation and Sign Up

Popsicle stick bombs!
Welcome to the cub scout family!

Thank you to all the new families for joining us at the orientation and sign up night! Our newest scouts had a great time with styrofoam rockets, popsicle stick bombs, and learning all about the great activities in store in Pack 3000.

August Pack Meeting

Cubmaster Mike Jacobs talks to the pack

It was great to have everyone back together for our first pack meeting of the year, with a theme of being “friendly”! It was a busy pack meeting: the scouts earned advancements for their summer activities, learned about this year’s popcorn fundraiser, and kept active with popcorn relay racing, cornhole, and word puzzles.

Check with your leaders if you haven’t turned in your forms/dues yet or haven’t received your handbook or kerchief yet.

Our next big event is the fall campout the weekend of September 21! Stay tuned for more details.

The August pack meeting presentation and the 2019 popcorn kickoff presentation are available in case you missed anything.

BFES Sneak Peek

Thanks for stopping by to visit us at the Birmingham Falls Elementary School Sneak Peek event! We would also like to thank BFES and principal Don Webb for allowing us to set up a table so that we can spread the word about scouting in the Milton community. We look forward to welcoming new recruits into Pack 3000!
